Nigeria
has formally announced its candidature to retain its seat on the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for the 2027–2030 term, reinforcing its
commitment to global digital governance and connectivity development.
The
announcement was made by Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation
and Digital Economy, on the margins of the 2026 ITU Council Meeting in Geneva.

Nigeria,
which has been a member of the ITU since 1961, has played an active role in
advancing key priorities within the organisation. These include strengthening
submarine cable resilience to improve the reliability of global communications
infrastructure, as well as advocating for more inclusive participation among
member states to support meaningful connectivity.

The
country also reiterated its commitment to contributing to the work of the Union
ahead of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2026, where strategic decisions on
the future direction of global telecommunications and digital policy are
expected to be made.
Officials
indicated that Nigeria will continue to engage with member states to secure
support for its candidature, positioning its role on the Council as part of
broader efforts to build a more responsive and inclusive global digital
ecosystem.
