South Africa's Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Blade Nzimande, has strengthened bilateral scientific ties during high-level engagements with China's premier research institutions as part of his official visit to the country. The Minister's meetings with the Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) highlighted growing cooperation between the two nations in scientific innovation and knowledge exchange.

At CAST, Minister Nzimande explored China's successful models for science popularization and talent development, expressing particular interest in adapting these approaches for South Africa's context. "China's remarkable achievements in building national consensus around science and coordinating research across government departments offer valuable lessons for our system," the Minister noted during discussions. The engagement focused on practical strategies to inspire youth participation in science and enhance public understanding of technological advancement.

The visit to CASS emphasized the critical role of social sciences in innovation ecosystems. Minister Nzimande commended the Academy's interdisciplinary approach, stating, "The integration of social sciences with technological development aligns perfectly with our philosophy at the Department of Science and Technology." The dialogue explored collaborative opportunities in policy research, innovation economics, and the societal impacts of emerging technologies.

These institutional visits form part of South Africa's broader strategy to leverage international partnerships in building its National System of Innovation. The Minister's delegation includes leaders from key South African science entities such as the National Research Foundation, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, and South African National Space Agency, ensuring technical follow-through on identified cooperation areas.

The visit culminates with Minister Nzimande's participation in the Second Ministerial Belt and Road Science and Technology Conference in Chengdu, where South Africa will join discussions on creating an inclusive global innovation community. The conference theme, "Together for Innovation, Development for All," resonates with South Africa's objectives to position science and technology as drivers of inclusive economic growth.
