The
founding General Manager of Angola’s space programme, Dr. Zolana Joao has
described the launch of the ANGEO-1 Earth Observation programme as the
transition of a long-held national vision into execution, marking a significant
step in Angola’s pursuit of space capability and technological sovereignty.
The
programme was officially launched on March 16, 2026, in Toulouse, France, in
partnership with Airbus. ANGEO-1 represents Angola’s first national Earth
observation system and is expected to provide the country with direct access to
very high-resolution satellite data.

Zolana
Joao noted that the initiative, built on more than a decade of planning,
reflects sustained commitment and resilience in developing Angola’s space
sector. He emphasised that ANGEO-1 is designed to deliver value from the outset
while supporting long-term national objectives, including strengthening
technological independence and building local expertise.
The
kick-off agreement was signed between Zolana Joao and Christophe Lemercier,
Vice President at Airbus Defence and Space, in the presence of Angola’s
Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social
Communication, Mário Oliveira, and Airbus Defence and Space President Alain
Fauré.
The
ANGEO-1 system will integrate satellite infrastructure, ground systems and
applications, creating a comprehensive ecosystem spanning upstream, midstream
and downstream segments of the space economy. Officials say the system will
support key sectors including agriculture, environmental monitoring, urban
planning and national security.

Zolana
Joao further indicated that the programme will play a critical role in
developing Angola’s space workforce by fostering the next generation of
engineers and specialists, while enabling the country to independently access
and utilise strategic geospatial data.
The
initiative forms part of Angola’s broader strategy to leverage space technology
for economic development, enhance data sovereignty and reduce reliance on
external providers.
