The Governor of the Bank of
Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has called for greater efforts to translate
Ghana's expanding digital financial access into improved financial health for
households and businesses.
He made the call on November
4, 2026, when he welcomed Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, the
United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health, to
Bank Square for the Financial Health Leadership Roundtable.
In his keynote address, Dr
Asiama noted that Ghana has become one of Africa’s leading digital finance
markets, with interoperable payment systems, mobile money and fintech
innovation driving access for millions.
He, however, stressed that
access must now translate into better financial health for households and
businesses through savings, insurance, pensions, investment, financial literacy
and productive, responsible credit.
The Governor also
highlighted micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) as the backbone
of Ghana’s economy, calling for technology, data and innovation to be leveraged
to close the financing gap and reduce information asymmetries.
He emphasised the need to
give viable businesses, women and smallholder farmers access to finance on fair
and sustainable terms.
Dr Asiama urged stakeholders
to move from discussion to action, with clear priorities and concrete
commitments to improve financial health for all Ghanaians.
