The United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP) Ghana has emphasised the need for fairness,
accountability and human oversight in the adoption of artificial intelligence
(AI) by public institutions, warning that faster government processes must not
come at the expense of responsible decision-making.
The message emerged on Day 2
of the Digital & AI Champions Training for Government, where experts from
KPMG Ghana explored the opportunities, risks and strategies for adopting AI in
the public sector.
Using practical examples
from procurement, participants examined how AI can help analyse tender
submissions, review contracts and identify potential inconsistencies, reducing
the time needed for complex processes.
However, the discussions
highlighted that AI-generated results can overlook critical context, reproduce
biases or contain inaccurate information.
For public institutions,
human oversight remains essential. Officials must be able to question
AI-generated findings, verify information and remain accountable for decisions.
