The International Mobile
Satellite Organization (IMSO) has held its 30th Assembly with Arabic and
Chinese included for the first time as official meeting languages, alongside
English, French, Russian and Spanish, enabling more delegates to participate in
discussions in their own language.
“Six different languages,
yet one shared commitment to international cooperation - multilingualism at the
IMSO Thirtieth Assembly,” IMSO said in a statement highlighting the role of
multilingualism in international cooperation.
The organisation thanked the
interpreters for their excellent work throughout the week, noting that their
work requires close coordination and concentration.
Depending on the languages
involved, an interpreter may listen to a colleague’s interpretation and relay
it into another language while keeping up with the original speaker. Technical
terms, acronyms and fast speeches make the task even more challenging.
“Speaking a little more
slowly certainly helps!” IMSO said.
The organisation emphasised
that international meetings depend on interpreters to facilitate communication
across languages and thanked those who helped make the Assembly a success.
