Kenya is moving to
strengthen its national artificial intelligence capacity with the signing of a
Letter of Agreement between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
Kenya and the Technopolis Development Authority to operationalise sovereign AI
infrastructure at the Konza Data Centre.
The agreement is expected to
expand Kenya’s capacity for responsible AI development and support applications
in public-service innovation, green technology, applied research and local AI
talent development.
The initiative is being
implemented under UNDP’s partnership with Kenya’s Ministry of Information,
Communications and the Digital Economy and the Technopolis Development
Authority.
The sovereign infrastructure
will support the ongoing AI Accelerator programme, providing a foundation for
developing and testing AI solutions aimed at addressing public-sector and
broader national challenges.
The infrastructure is also
expected to support GreenTech solutions and applied research while
strengthening opportunities for Kenyan researchers, developers and other local
technology professionals to build AI capabilities within the country.
The agreement represents a
step towards increasing national ownership of AI infrastructure and creating an
environment for secure and locally relevant innovation.
UNDP Kenya said the
initiative moves Kenya from AI ambition towards nationally owned infrastructure
designed to support responsible innovation and generate public value.
