Starlink
has delivered 150 connectivity kits to support the ongoing Ebola response in
the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), providing high-speed internet
access to strengthen public health operations in affected areas of Ituri
Province.
The
deployment is aimed at enhancing communication and coordination among response
teams engaged in surveillance, testing, treatment, case reporting and broader
field operations as authorities work to contain the outbreak.
According
to Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the kits
will help improve real-time data transmission, strengthen coordination between
health facilities and emergency operations centres, and support logistics and
supply chain management in remote and hard-to-reach communities.
The
initiative follows discussions between Africa CDC and Starlink on leveraging
satellite-based broadband connectivity to support emergency health responses
across the continent. Powered by a low-Earth orbit satellite network, the
system is expected to enable rapid deployment of internet services without
reliance on traditional ground infrastructure.
Africa
CDC Director General Dr Jean Kaseya said timely and reliable connectivity is
critical during outbreak response, noting that frontline health workers depend
on fast communication and accurate data to make informed decisions.
He
added that improved connectivity will enhance case reporting, coordination of
response activities and access to technical support for teams working on the
ground.
Africa
CDC expressed appreciation to Starlink for its contribution, describing the
intervention as a timely support measure that will strengthen ongoing efforts
to control the outbreak and protect lives in affected communities.
