Somalia has launched a Somali Cybersecurity Terminology Glossary aimed at developing and standardising cybersecurity-related terms in the Somali language as part of broader efforts to strengthen digital literacy and improve public understanding of cybersecurity issues.

The initiative was launched by the National Communications Authority (NCA) in collaboration with the Academy of Science, Culture and Literature and the Regional Somali Language Academy (AGA) during a ceremony held in Mogadishu.

The event brought together government officials, academics, language experts, technology specialists, and other stakeholders to support the development of a unified Somali-language framework for cybersecurity terminology.

Speaking at the launch, Acting Director General of the Academy of Science, Culture and Literature, Abdifitah Ahmed Abukar, underscored the importance of ensuring that the Somali language evolves alongside scientific and technological advancements.

He noted that strengthening language development is essential for enabling society to benefit from emerging opportunities and enhancing public awareness in the digital age.

Acting Chairman of the Regional Somali Language Academy, Prof. Abdalla Omar Mansur, highlighted the role of terminology in supporting scientific and technical knowledge. He emphasized the need for new terms to be developed through a standardised process that builds on previous language development efforts while avoiding literal translations.

According to him, such an approach would ensure that the Somali language remains capable of accommodating new knowledge and emerging disciplines.

Director General of the National Communications Authority, Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, described the glossary as a significant step toward strengthening the use of Somali within the cybersecurity sector.
