A delegation
from the Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV), led by
Executive Director Klen Jäärats, is in Uganda this week to strengthen bilateral
cooperation in digital education and explore new opportunities for
collaboration. The visit underscores Uganda’s status as one of Estonia’s
strategic partner countries in Africa and highlights ongoing efforts to support
digital transformation in Uganda’s education sector.

During the
visit, the ESTDEV team met with local and international partners, including the
European Union Delegation to Uganda, UNDP, UNESCO, the National ICT Innovation
Hub, Enabel, and GIZ Uganda. Discussions focused on enhancing digital solutions
for schools, improving teachers’ digital skills, and fostering digital literacy
among Ugandan citizens.
Jäärats
emphasized education as a central pillar of Estonia’s development cooperation
with Uganda, noting the importance of aligning educational outcomes with labor
market needs. One key achievement of this partnership has been the development
of a national qualifications framework, which aims to facilitate the
international recognition of Ugandan educational credentials.

ESTDEV
currently supports five ongoing bilateral projects in Uganda, in addition to
several regional initiatives under the TeamEurope framework. The visit also
included expressions of gratitude to Girisch Nair, Estonia’s Honorary Consul in
Uganda, for his continued support in fostering strong ties between the two
nations.
