The Malawi
Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), through its Universal Service Fund
(USF), has launched the second phase of its Connect a School (CAS) project,
marking a significant step toward achieving the nation’s digital transformation
goals. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held across 16 sites in ten districts,
including Karonga, Mzimba, Nkhata Bay, Mulanje, Phalombe, Mangochi, Ntcheu,
Salima, Lilongwe, and Dedza.

This expansion
builds on the success of the project’s first phase, which delivered 75 ICT
laboratories to schools nationwide. The second phase will see the construction
of 120 state-of-the-art SMART ICT labs, each equipped to accommodate up to 60
computers. In support of enhanced digital learning, MACRA will also provide
free internet access to each lab for a period of three years.
The initiative
aligns with the Malawi 2063 Vision, which seeks to create an inclusively
wealthy and self-reliant nation through digital enablement. By expanding access
to technology and connectivity in educational institutions, the project aims to
bridge the digital divide, empower students with critical digital skills, and
foster innovation from the grassroots level.

The Connect a
School project underscores MACRA’s commitment to leveraging the Universal
Service Fund to promote digital inclusion and equitable access to information
and communication technologies across Malawi.
