The President
of the African Space Agency, Dr. Tidiane Quattara has led a high-level African
delegation to the Ghana Meteorological Agency aimed at reinforcing continental
cooperation in climate science and Earth observation.
The delegation
was warmly received by Director-General Dr. Eric Asuman and Deputy Director Dr.
Ignatius Kweku Williams, a distinguished alumnus of the GMES Africa Programme.
The meeting highlighted the critical role national meteorological agencies play
in providing reliable climate information and facilitating access to vital
satellite data for decision-making across various sectors.
Discussions
centered on future capacity-building initiatives designed to strengthen
Africa's expertise in Earth observation and climate services. Both parties
emphasized the importance of developing local technical capabilities to
interpret and apply space-derived data for practical solutions to climate
challenges. This approach recognizes that Africa's resilience to climate change
depends on strong institutions empowered by scientific knowledge and
technological innovation.

The visit
underscored the value of continental collaboration in addressing shared
environmental challenges. By partnering with established agencies like GMet,
which forms part of the MarCNoWA Consortium, African nations can leverage
collective expertise to transform raw satellite data into actionable knowledge
that supports sustainable development and saves lives.
The sharing of
best practices, technical knowledge, and data resources among African
institutions represents a significant step toward self-reliance in
environmental monitoring and climate resilience planning. This cooperation
framework represents a significant advancement in Africa's journey toward
technological self-sufficiency in Earth observation and climate services,
ultimately contributing to more effective climate action and sustainable
development outcomes across the continent.
