MTN Group has
announced that Charles Molapisi will resume his role as Group Chief Technology
and Information Officer (GCTIO) with expanded responsibilities focused on
accelerating artificial intelligence adoption across the telecommunications
giant's operations. This strategic appointment comes as part of MTN's
comprehensive executive reshuffle designed to strengthen the company's
technological capabilities and drive digital innovation across Africa.
Molapisi, who
recently concluded a successful tenure as CEO of MTN South Africa where he
maintained network leadership during challenging periods of power outages,
brings his extensive network and IT expertise back to the group technology
function. His return to the GCTIO position signals MTN's intensified focus on
harnessing emerging technologies to create value and enhance operational
efficiency.
In his
revitalized role, Molapisi will spearhead the integration of AI solutions
across MTN's business domains, including network optimization, customer
experience enhancement, and workforce productivity improvement. The company has
identified significant medium-term value creation opportunities through the
strategic deployment of AI technologies, positioning this initiative as a
cornerstone of its growth strategy beyond 2025.
During his
previous stint as GCTIO, Molapisi established himself as a forward-thinking
technology leader, overseeing the modernization of MTN's network infrastructure
and digital platforms. His renewed mandate expands beyond traditional
technology responsibilities to include the strategic infusion of AI
capabilities throughout MTN's three core business platforms: Connectivity,
Fintech, and Digital Infrastructure.
The appointment
forms part of MTN's broader executive committee restructuring that sees several
leadership changes aimed at enhancing strategic execution. While Molapisi
focuses on technology innovation and AI adoption, other executives will drive
initiatives in sustainability, market expansion, and digital infrastructure
development, creating a comprehensive leadership team capable of advancing
MTN's Ambition 2025 strategy.
Molapisi will
assume his new responsibilities effective 1 November 2025, working alongside
MTN's other technology leaders, including Mazen Mroué who will focus
exclusively on expanding the group's digital infrastructure business including
fibre networks and data centres.
