The African Institute for
Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and the Institute of Legal Practice and
Development (ILPD) have signed a five-year partnership to advance joint
research, training and knowledge exchange, beginning with the development of an
artificial intelligence-enabled platform for the Rwanda Law Journal.
The platform, which is
already at an advanced stage of development, is designed to improve access to
legal research and simplify the journal’s publishing process.
The partnership brings
together mathematical sciences and legal practice to explore how expertise in
artificial intelligence (AI) and mathematical reasoning can support legal
research, professional training and the wider transformation of Rwanda’s justice
sector.
Dr. Aime Muyoboke, Rector of
ILPD, said the collaboration could extend beyond the journal to support broader
changes in the justice sector.
“We see this as a starting
point for a wider impact across Rwanda’s justice sector, bringing mathematical
reasoning into the technological transformation already underway.”
For AIMS, the partnership
provides an opportunity to contribute expertise in AI while strengthening
understanding of the legal considerations surrounding the technology.
“We can bring expertise in
AI, and we are also very keen to learn about the legal aspects of AI that we
can include in our own training,” said Prof. Sam Yala, Network Centre
President, AIMS.
The two institutions intend
to use the collaboration to strengthen academic cooperation and support the
development of justice services, with the broader ambition of contributing to
socioeconomic transformation in Rwanda and across Africa.
