Ghana’s Securities and
Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched the Africa Virtual Assets Summit (AVAS),
establishing a platform for stakeholders to discuss the regulation and
development of virtual assets and the future of finance in Africa.
Kwame Oppong, Senior Advisor
for Africa at Stellar Development Foundation, welcomed the launch, highlighting
the quality of the event and the diversity of stakeholders brought together to
discuss the sector.
In a LinkedIn post, Oppong
said the significance of the launch extended beyond the regulator’s role in
convening discussions, pointing to the intentionality, quality and substance of
the engagement.
He said the participation
and level of engagement signalled a shift in the conversation around virtual
assets, from whether they matter to how the right regulatory, institutional and
market infrastructure can be developed to harness their potential responsibly.
Oppong also expressed
confidence in the upcoming summit, saying, “If the launch is anything to go by,
November is definitely going to be about AVAS.”
He commended SEC Ghana for
creating a platform that brings together stakeholders across the virtual asset
ecosystem to help shape discussions on the future of finance in Africa.
The summit is expected to
provide an avenue for regulators, industry participants and other stakeholders
to engage on the frameworks and infrastructure needed to support the
responsible development of virtual assets.
