Nigeria is set to strengthen
its digital infrastructure architecture with the rollout of a National Digital
Alphanumeric Postcode System, a flagship initiative designed to improve
location identification, enhance service delivery, and support national security
coordination.
Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani announced
the development while highlighting its role within a broader set of national
digital transformation programmes, including Project BRIDGE, the 90,000km fibre
optic infrastructure initiative, and NUCAP, which aims to connect over 20
million Nigerians through 3,700 telecommunications towers.
He explained that the
postcode system will assign every location in the country a unique,
machine-readable, geographically anchored digital address, forming a
foundational layer for Nigeria’s emerging digital ecosystem.
According to him, beyond
improving traditional mail delivery, the system is expected to enhance
emergency response services, strengthen national security coordination, improve
address verification processes, and support the growth of logistics and e-commerce
sectors. It is also expected to contribute to more efficient delivery of public
services by ensuring accurate identification of individuals, businesses, and
physical locations.
Tijani noted that the
initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to build a robust digital economy
infrastructure, emphasizing that accurate digital addressing is essential for
enabling inclusive access to services and supporting innovation across sectors.
He made the remarks during a
workshop with the Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of the
Nigerian Postal Service, Tola Odeyemi, alongside representatives from security
agencies and other key stakeholders, focused on the practical application of
the postcode system in improving emergency response and security coordination.
The minister added that
government will continue engaging stakeholders in the coming months ahead of
the official launch scheduled for October, expressing optimism that the system
will deliver wide-ranging socio-economic benefits across Nigeria.
