The Africa Centres for
Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), under the African Union–European
Union Health Partnership, has convened partners for the kick-off meeting of the
Team Europe Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and One Health Workforce
Strengthening.
The meeting brought together
representatives from the European Commission, the European & Developing
Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), the International Centre for
Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS), the European Centre for Disease
Prevention and Control (ECDC), the African Society for Laboratory Medicine
(ASLM), and other technical experts.
According to Africa CDC, the
engagement marks the beginning of coordinated implementation efforts aimed at
strengthening Africa’s response to antimicrobial resistance through a One
Health approach that integrates human, animal, and environmental health systems.
The initiative focuses on
aligning strategic priorities among partners, clearly defining roles and
responsibilities, and establishing a shared implementation roadmap to guide
collaborative action across the continent.
Stakeholders emphasized that
the coordinated framework is designed to enhance Africa’s capacity to prevent,
detect, and respond to antimicrobial resistance, which remains a significant
global public health threat.
Africa CDC noted that the
partnership will contribute to strengthening health systems and advancing
Africa’s health security and sovereignty agenda through improved workforce
capacity and institutional collaboration.
The meeting marks a key step
in operationalizing the AU–EU health cooperation framework, with a focus on
long-term, sustainable interventions to address antimicrobial resistance across
African member states.
