The United Nations Economic
Commission for Africa (ECA), through its Data Governance in Africa initiative,
has supported the Republic of the Congo in advancing the development of its
National Data Governance Strategy.
From June 2 to June 9, 2026,
a series of consultations, stakeholder engagements, and capacity-building
activities were held in Brazzaville aimed at assessing the country’s current
data governance landscape and identifying national priorities for reform.
The engagements brought
together representatives from government institutions, regulatory bodies,
academia, civil society, development partners, and the private sector to
contribute to the development of a comprehensive and coordinated national
approach to data governance.
According to ECA, the
initiative is designed to strengthen institutional capacities and support the
creation of a secure, inclusive, and trusted data governance framework.
The framework is expected to
promote innovation, enhance digital sovereignty, and support sustainable
development objectives in the Republic of the Congo.
ECA noted that the
collaborative approach reflects the growing importance of data as a strategic
resource for governance, economic transformation, and digital development
across Africa.
The initiative forms part of
broader continental efforts to harmonize data governance systems and strengthen
Africa’s position in the global digital economy.
