The
International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has reaffirmed its commitment to
strengthening cooperation with the European Union on key digital development
priorities, including artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure,
cybersecurity, and digital public services.
The
discussions took place during the Telecommunications Council meeting in
Luxembourg, where ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin engaged with
European Union ministers on strategies to address emerging digital challenges
and accelerate inclusive digital transformation.
According
to the ITU, the dialogue focused on critical issues shaping the future of the
digital economy, including investments in resilient digital infrastructure, the
development and governance of artificial intelligence technologies, and efforts
to bridge digital divides through enhanced connectivity initiatives.
Bogdan-Martin
highlighted the longstanding relationship between the ITU and Europe, noting
that the region has played a significant role in advancing international
cooperation in telecommunications and information and communication
technologies for more than 160 years.
The
ITU also emphasized its ongoing collaboration with European partners on
initiatives spanning school connectivity, digital public infrastructure, and
cybersecurity capacity-building programmes. The organization expressed
readiness to deepen engagement under the European Union’s Global Gateway
strategy, which seeks to expand sustainable digital and infrastructure
development partnerships worldwide.
The
meeting was facilitated by the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European
Union and forms part of broader efforts to strengthen multilateral cooperation
on technology policy and digital development.
Both
sides underscored the importance of international partnerships in addressing
the opportunities and challenges presented by rapid technological change, while
working toward a more inclusive and secure digital future.
