A
Malawian innovator has been recognised at the 2026 National ICT Innovation
Awards for developing an artificial intelligence-powered assistive solution
aimed at improving digital accessibility for people with severe motor
disabilities.
Chimwemwe
Liwonde, a first-class graduate in computing, emerged winner in the Best Social
Impact Solution category at the awards organised by the Malawi Communications
Regulatory Authority.

His
innovation, an AI-powered desktop eye-control system, enables individuals with
conditions such as cerebral palsy or quadriplegia to operate a computer using
only eye movements. The solution leverages computer vision and artificial
intelligence through a standard laptop webcam, eliminating the need for costly
specialised hardware and functioning entirely offline.
The
system is designed to support inclusive education and rehabilitation, offering
a low-cost alternative tailored to local needs in Malawi. Developers say the
technology has the potential to expand access to digital tools for underserved
communities and individuals with disabilities.
The
project was developed with support from Unipod Malawi, which provided
incubation and mentorship to refine the concept from an academic prototype into
a deployable solution.

During
the awards event, Liwonde presented the innovation to stakeholders including
government officials, development partners, and private sector representatives,
highlighting the role of locally developed technologies in addressing
real-world challenges.
Plans
are underway to scale the solution nationally, with a focus on partnerships
with educational institutions and relevant organisations to support broader
adoption.
The
recognition underscores growing momentum in Malawi’s innovation ecosystem,
particularly in the development of inclusive technologies that align with
national digital and development priorities.
