Ethiopia’s Minister of Innovation and
Technology, Frehiwot Tamru, has called for strengthened institutional capacity,
clearer regulatory responsibilities and improved legal frameworks at the
Ethiopian Technology Authority to support the safe development and use of
technology.
The Minister made the
remarks during a visit to the Authority, accompanied by the Ministry’s State
Ministers and Directors General of accountable institutions.
She emphasised the need to
clarify the Authority’s statutory mandate and strengthen its ability to protect
people, property and the environment while enabling technology development and
contributing to national development.
Tamru called for clearly
defined responsibilities and better coordination with other regulators,
alongside stronger legal frameworks and laboratory capabilities.
She also highlighted the
importance of increasing public awareness and providing accessible digital
services to improve the Authority’s regulatory operations.
The Minister stressed that
regulatory success must be measured beyond the number of licences issued and
inspections conducted, focusing instead on risks reduced, safety protected and
tangible contributions to innovation and national development.
