Somalia advances economic reforms as climate finance takes centre stage

Somalia has advanced discussions on economic reforms, institutional strengthening and climate finance mobilisation following a series of high-level engagements involving the Ministry of Finance Somalia and the country’s development partners.

According to Liban Obsiye, Executive Director of the National Climate Fund (NCF) – Somalia, the country last week led the coordination of the Horn of Africa Initiative ministerial meeting, concluded the 4th Review of the IMF program and launched the 2025 Financial Governance Report.

The engagements also included meetings between H.E. Minister Bihi Iman Egeh and the Ambassadors and Development Directors of Somalia's key bilateral and multilateral partners.

In a statement shared by Obsiye, Minister Bihi Egeh said Somalia remains focused on deepening reforms, strengthening institutions and creating conditions for sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

"Somalia remains firmly committed to deepening reforms, strengthening our institutions, and creating the conditions for sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Continued partnership and coordinated support will be essential as we consolidate these gains and advance the next phase of our economic transformation."

Obsiye said many of the key discussions across the meetings featured the economic impact of climate change as well as climate finance mobilisation and access.

He said he participated in the discussions as Executive Director of the National Climate Fund (NCF) – Somalia, describing the issues as relevant and timely for the country’s economic transformation.
