Ethiopia’s Council of
Ministers has unanimously approved the submission of a draft National Data
Management Proclamation to the House of Peoples’ Representatives, marking a
step towards strengthening the country’s data management framework and
supporting its digital transformation goals.
The decision was taken at
the Council of Ministers’ 59th regular meeting, where members agreed to submit
the draft proclamation to the House of Peoples’ Representatives with additional
inputs.
The draft legislation is
designed to support Ethiopia’s digital transformation ambitions while
strengthening the management and use of data across the country.
According to the Ethiopian
Artificial Intelligence Institute, the proposed proclamation also recognises
the role of artificial intelligence in enhancing research and innovation,
accelerating the development of the digital economy and supporting the establishment
of a data-driven economic development system.
The draft proclamation seeks
to modernise public services by strengthening data security and sovereignty
while improving data sharing, readability and reuse.
The proposed framework is
expected to provide a basis for more effective management and utilisation of
national data as Ethiopia advances its digital transformation agenda.
The submission of the draft
proclamation to Parliament follows the Council of Ministers’ decision to
advance the proposal with additional inputs for consideration by the House of
Peoples’ Representatives.
