Senegal has stepped up its
engagement ahead of the 2026 Plenipotentiary Conference of the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU), using the fourth African Preparatory Meeting in
Abidjan to mobilise support for its candidacy for re-election to the ITU
Council for the 2027–2030 period.
The Senegalese delegation
participated in the fourth African Preparatory Meeting (RP4), held in Abidjan
as part of preparations for the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, which is
scheduled to take place in November 2026 in Doha.
The meeting provided an
opportunity for African countries to coordinate their positions on major
challenges affecting telecommunications and digital technology ahead of the
global conference.
For Senegal, the meeting
also served as an important platform to strengthen consultations with African
delegations and international partners as it seeks another term on the ITU
Council.
The Senegalese delegation
contributed to discussions on several strategic issues shaping the digital
sector, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, the World Summit on
the Information Society (WSIS), over-the-top (OTT) services and the resilience
of digital infrastructure.
The discussions formed part
of broader African preparations for the Doha conference, with participating
countries working to develop and coordinate positions on issues of strategic
importance to the continent.
Senegal said it intends to
maintain its engagement within the ITU Council and continue promoting African
priorities as the continent seeks to expand connectivity, advance digital
inclusion, strengthen infrastructure resilience and build digital capacity.
The country will continue
consultations with African delegations and international partners in the run-up
to the November conference in Doha.
