The Governor of the Central
Bank of Congo (BCC), André Wameso Nkualoloki, has participated in the 48th
meeting of the Board of Governors of the Association of African Central Banks
(AACB), where central bank leaders discussed macroeconomic convergence, monetary
policy coordination and improvements to cross-border payment systems.
The meeting was held on
September 18, 2026, in Nairobi, Kenya, and was preceded on September 16 by a
meeting of the Association’s Bureau, which Governor Wameso Nkualoloki also
attended in his capacity as President of the Central Africa sub-region.
The discussions focused on
several key issues affecting African central banks, including progress towards
meeting macroeconomic convergence criteria, harmonisation of monetary policy
frameworks, particularly the adoption of inflation targeting, and efforts to
improve cross-border payment systems while reducing transaction costs.
The governors also discussed
the operationalisation of the African Monetary Institute, an initiative linked
to efforts to deepen monetary and financial cooperation across the continent.
At the conclusion of the
meeting, the Board of Governors recommended that African central banks continue
strengthening their efforts towards macroeconomic convergence.
Particular attention was
drawn to the progress still required in meeting the criterion relating to
fiscal pressure. According to the association, the target for this criterion is
currently being met by only 25 percent of African countries.
