South Africa has officially
launched its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), a digital system designed
to simplify and accelerate the process for travellers seeking to enter the
country.
President Cyril Ramaphosa
launched the system at OR Tambo International Airport, describing ease of
movement as an increasingly important factor in determining a country’s
competitiveness.
The ETA allows eligible
travellers to apply for travel authorisation online from their homes, with
applications expected to be processed within hours. The digital process is
intended to reduce administrative burdens associated with traditional visa
applications and improve the overall travel experience.
Speaking at the launch,
President Ramaphosa said countries increasingly compete not only on the
strength of their economies and infrastructure but also on how easily people
can visit, invest, trade, study and conduct business.
The introduction of the ETA
forms part of South Africa’s broader efforts to modernise immigration processes
through digital technologies while making the country more accessible to
international visitors.
The system is expected to
support tourism and business travel by providing travellers with a more
convenient digital pathway to obtain the required authorisation before
travelling to South Africa.
