Botswana and EU launch ASPIRE Programme to accelerate clean energy transition

Botswana has launched the ASPIRE Botswana Programme, a strategic partnership with the European Union aimed at accelerating the country’s transition towards a cleaner, more secure and resilient energy sector.

The initiative, announced by Cabinet Minister of Minerals and Energy Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, is designed to support Botswana’s renewable energy ambitions while strengthening the institutional and investment environment required to develop the country’s energy sector.

ASPIRE will focus on more than increasing renewable energy generation. The programme will also support institutional strengthening, improved energy efficiency, investment mobilisation and skills development to help build the human capacity required for Botswana’s future economy.

Kenewendo said Botswana has significant renewable energy potential that can be unlocked through strategic partnerships and targeted investment.

The programme is expected to contribute to the country’s energy security by supporting the development of a more diversified and resilient energy system while creating opportunities for greater participation in the emerging clean energy economy.

The partnership with the European Union also reflects Botswana’s efforts to attract investment and strengthen the policy and institutional frameworks needed to support sustainable energy development.

Beyond infrastructure and generation capacity, the programme places emphasis on developing skills that can support the long-term transformation of Botswana’s energy sector and create new economic opportunities for citizens.

The government expressed appreciation to the European Union, implementing partners and other stakeholders supporting the initiative, describing the collaboration as an important step towards building an energy sector that is sustainable, inclusive and equipped to meet the country’s future needs.
