The Chief Executive Officer
of the Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANet), Dr. Grace Githaiga, has engaged
with global ICT security leaders at the United Nations in New York as civil
society continues to play a greater role in shaping international digital
governance discussions.
Dr. Githaiga met with Ms.
Egriselda López, Ambassador and Permanent Representative and Chair of the
Global Mechanism on developments in Information and Communication Technologies
(ICTs), following the Substantive Plenary Session held at the UN from 20 to 24
July 2026.
The engagement focused on
ongoing international discussions around ICT security, cybersecurity, digital
rights and responsible state behaviour in the use of digital technologies.
The meeting followed Dr.
Githaiga’s address to the plenary, where she represented civil society
organisations advocating for digital rights, human security and peace in global
ICT security processes.
KICTANet said the engagement
highlights the growing importance of ensuring that civil society voices are
included in international negotiations on cybersecurity and digital governance.
The organisation noted that
participation in these high-level discussions provides an opportunity for
digital rights communities, including those in Kenya, to contribute
perspectives on the development of global norms and frameworks governing the
use of ICTs.
The United Nations
discussions form part of broader efforts to strengthen international
cooperation on cybersecurity, promote responsible use of digital technologies
and address emerging challenges in the global digital environment.
