Kenya is advancing its
digital governance agenda at the 7th African Telecommunications Union (ATU)
Conference of Plenipotentiaries (CPL-26) in Abuja, Nigeria, where regional
leaders are discussing the future of telecommunications and information and
communications technology (ICT) cooperation across Africa.
The Kenyan delegation is led
by Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke, who
paid a courtesy call on Kenya’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Isaac
Parashina, to strengthen coordination between the delegation and the country’s
diplomatic mission in Abuja.
The conference comes at a
significant time for the African Telecommunications Union as delegates prepare
to elect a new Secretary-General following the completion of the second and
final term of the current Secretary-General, John Omo.
Kenya will host a luncheon
on the sidelines of the conference on 24 July 2026 in recognition of Omo’s
contribution to regional ICT cooperation and as part of efforts to build
support for the country’s bid for a seat on the International Telecommunication
Union (ITU) Council.
During the conference, Kenya
is promoting key priorities aimed at accelerating digital transformation across
the continent, including expanding broadband connectivity, advancing digital
inclusion, strengthening spectrum management and enhancing regional cybersecurity
cooperation.
The ATU Conference of
Plenipotentiaries serves as the union’s highest decision-making forum, bringing
together ministers, regulators and senior government officials from member
states to determine strategic priorities and strengthen collaboration on Africa’s
digital development agenda.
