Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has highlighted the country’s progress in artificial intelligence development, emphasizing the achievements of the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute and the importance of strengthening AI education for future generations.

Speaking during the 30th regular session of the fifth anniversary of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, Prime Minister Abiy said Ethiopia’s decision to establish the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute was a forward-looking move that positioned the country among early adopters of AI initiatives on the continent.

The Prime Minister noted that when the institute was created, similar national-level artificial intelligence initiatives were not widely established across Africa. He said Ethiopia has since built a significant AI institution within a relatively short period, achieving notable progress in the sector.

Abiy emphasized that the government is now focusing on improving the quality and accessibility of education to ensure that the benefits of artificial intelligence development are sustained and passed on to future generations.

He said strengthening human capacity remains central to Ethiopia’s ambition of expanding its artificial intelligence ecosystem and enabling more citizens to participate in emerging technology fields.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come as countries across Africa accelerate investments in artificial intelligence, digital skills and innovation infrastructure as part of broader efforts to drive economic transformation and improve public services through technology.
