The Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency
(NASRDA), Matthew Adepoju, is set to participate in a high-level international
discussion on the role of space technologies in advancing water management,
security, and diplomacy.
The
event, titled Delivering Water Diplomacy through Space, will take
place in Vienna, Austria, on June 15, 2026, and is being organized by the
European Space Policy Institute in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of
Slovenia to the United Nations in Vienna.
The
forum will bring together policymakers, diplomats, space sector experts, and
international organizations to examine how space-based capabilities can support
more effective management of water resources and contribute to international
cooperation on water-related challenges.
Dr.
Adepoju will join a panel of distinguished speakers that includes Melita
Zupevc, Tanja Miškova, Vincent Gabaglio, Matjaž Ivačič, and Tomaž Rodič.
According
to ESPI, the discussion will contribute to the development of a broader “Space
for Water” policy agenda aimed at identifying practical actions and areas for
future international cooperation. The initiative forms part of the institute’s
Vienna Space Diplomacy programme, which seeks to strengthen engagement between
the space community and diplomatic stakeholders on global challenges.
The
participation of NASRDA’s Director General highlights Nigeria’s growing role in
leveraging space technology for sustainable development and its increasing
engagement in international discussions on the application of satellite-based
solutions to address critical environmental and resource management issues.
