The
Chief Executive Officer of Mauritius Telecom, Veemal Gungadin, has called for a
shift from basic AI literacy to what he described as “accountable
intelligence,” urging users of artificial intelligence systems to prioritize
responsibility, transparency, and verification in their applications.
He
made the remarks during the Learn-AI.School Innovation Challenge 2026 Award
Ceremony, where students were recognized for innovative projects developed
under the national programme.
According
to Mr. Gungadin, artificial intelligence outputs should not be accepted at face
value, stressing that AI-generated content must be explainable, verifiable, and
defensible by those who deploy it. He emphasized the need for users to be
accountable for the intelligence they leverage.
The
event was attended by several high-profile dignitaries, including the President
of the Republic, Dharambeer Gokhool; Vice-President Robert Hungley; Minister of
Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Ashok Subron; and
Chairman of Mauritius Telecom, Sarat Lallah, among others.
The
Learn-AI.School Innovation Challenge, now in its second edition, is a national
competition-based training initiative launched by the Office of the President
in partnership with Mauritius Telecom and other stakeholders. The programme is
designed to equip young people with artificial intelligence skills to develop
solutions addressing national challenges.
This
year’s winners included SSS Sodnac in the Grade 10 category and London College
in the Grade 12 category, whose projects were recognized for creativity,
innovation, and social impact.
