Benin has appointed Mahuna Akplogan as Minister of Digital Transformation and Innovation, entrusting him with responsibility for the country's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy as part of the newly constituted government under President Romuald Wadagni.

Akplogan brings extensive experience spanning research, entrepreneurship and technology ecosystem development, positioning him to oversee the implementation of policies aimed at accelerating the country’s digital transformation agenda.

The appointment aligns with President Wadagni’s vision of transforming Benin into an AI-driven economy capable of developing and exporting artificial intelligence solutions and digital innovations beyond its borders.

The Ministry is expected to play a central role in advancing key national priorities, including the development of digital talent, support for technology startups, expansion of digital infrastructure, enhancement of computing capabilities and the establishment of governance frameworks for the responsible deployment of artificial intelligence.

Industry observers note that the success of the initiative will depend on the country's ability to build a skilled workforce in artificial intelligence, data science and software engineering while creating an enabling environment for innovation and technology entrepreneurship.

The government is also expected to focus on strengthening research and development, attracting investment into the digital sector and positioning Benin as a regional hub for technological innovation and experimentation.
