Rwanda and the United States
have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Strategic Civil Nuclear
Cooperation on the sidelines of the Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa
(NEISA), marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral collaboration in
the nuclear energy sector.
The agreement was signed by
Rwanda’s Minister of State, Usta Kaitesi, and Renee Sonderman, representing the
U.S. Department of State.
The MoU is expected to
deepen cooperation between the two countries in the area of civil nuclear
development, while promoting shared goals of clean, secure and sustainable
energy solutions.

Officials said the agreement
reflects growing international confidence in Rwanda’s long-term energy
ambitions and its commitment to advancing innovative energy technologies to
support economic growth and energy security.
The signing also highlights
increasing collaboration between African countries and global partners in
exploring nuclear energy as part of broader strategies aimed at addressing
rising energy demands and accelerating low-carbon development.
The Nuclear Energy
Innovation Summit for Africa brought together policymakers, industry leaders
and international stakeholders to discuss the future of nuclear energy
development across the continent and opportunities for strategic partnerships.
