The
South African National Space Agency (SANSA) has signed a partnership agreement
with Walter Sisulu University aimed at advancing space innovation, research
collaboration, and skills development in South Africa.
The
agreement forms part of broader efforts to strengthen institutional cooperation
in space science and technology, with a focus on building local capacity and
expanding opportunities in the Eastern Cape and beyond.

According
to SANSA Chief Executive Officer Humbulani Mudau, the partnership represents a
strategic investment in the country’s future capabilities and highlights the
importance of collaboration between academia, government, and traditional
leadership structures in driving innovation-led development.
He
noted that the initiative builds on recent developments, including the launch
of the Natural Resources Management Programme in collaboration with the
Amaxhosa Kingdom, provincial government, and other stakeholders. The programme
is designed to integrate space-based technologies, socio-economic data, and
Fourth Industrial Revolution innovations to address challenges such as food
security, disaster risk reduction, water management, rural development, and
sustainable human settlements planning.

The
partnership will focus on a range of activities, including staff exchanges,
joint research funding applications, curriculum development, co-supervision of
postgraduate students, community engagement initiatives, and the establishment
of research centres and centres of excellence in space applications.
Mudau
emphasized the importance of youth engagement and education in building South
Africa’s future space capabilities, noting that innovation must be rooted in
communities and supported through strong academic and training institutions.
SANSA
stated that the collaboration is expected to contribute to a more inclusive and
locally grounded national space programme aligned with South Africa’s broader
development priorities.
