The Government of Sierra Leone has officially relaunched Sierratel as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), marking a major step in the revitalization of the state-owned telecommunications provider.

The relaunch ceremony, held at the Miatta Conference Centre, saw His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio formally receive the first Sierratel SIM card from the company’s Managing Director, Joe Abass Bangura.

Sierratel’s return to the market follows a strategic investment partnership with Africell Sierra Leone, enabling the state-owned operator to resume services under an MVNO model. The arrangement is intended to strengthen national telecommunications infrastructure while improving service delivery and coverage.

Government officials described the development as part of broader efforts to modernize the country’s digital and communications sector, positioning Sierratel as a renewed player in the competitive mobile connectivity market.

With operations now fully restored, Sierratel SIM cards are available nationwide through designated points of sale, as the company re-enters the market with a focus on expanding access and improving connectivity across Sierra Leone.
