ICASA, Internet Society convene stakeholders on Open Fibre Data Standard

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), in collaboration with the Internet Society, has hosted a stakeholder workshop focused on advancing the Open Fibre Data Standard (OFDS), as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen transparency and coordination in digital infrastructure development.

The workshop, facilitated by ICASA Councillor Mushi, brought together industry stakeholders, policymakers and technical experts to deliberate on the role of standardized data frameworks in supporting regulatory oversight and sector growth.

Speaking at the event, ICASA Chairperson Mothibi Ramusi underscored the importance of building regulatory trust through structured and consistent stakeholder engagement. He highlighted accurate fibre infrastructure mapping as a critical component in enabling informed decision-making and improving network planning across the country.

Discussions during the workshop were anchored around two panel sessions that examined key issues including digital infrastructure mapping, data transparency and information security. Participants emphasized that access to reliable and standardized data is essential for driving efficiency, reducing duplication of infrastructure and enhancing service delivery.

The Open Fibre Data Standard was presented as a strategic tool to support policy alignment between licensees and regulatory authorities. Stakeholders noted that adopting a unified data standard could improve interoperability, streamline reporting processes and strengthen evidence-based regulatory approaches.

The workshop forms part of broader efforts to accelerate digital transformation and expand broadband access, with stakeholders agreeing on the need for continued collaboration to unlock the full potential of data-driven infrastructure development.
