South
African cleantech innovators have earned international recognition after
showcasing their solutions at Cleantech Days, held alongside the International
Vienna Energy and Climate Forum in Austria.
The
event, part of the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme South Africa
(GCIP-SA), brought together innovators, policymakers and industry leaders to
highlight the role of clean technologies in transforming energy systems,
driving economic diversification and supporting climate resilience.

Three
leading South African ventures—Vonnie Projects, Phoka M Holdings and GODISANG
SPACES—represented the country at the Global Pitching Competition, competing
against participants from 22 countries. Phoka M Holdings advanced to the final
six with its chemical-free water treatment innovation, designed to provide
sustainable and accessible solutions to water challenges.
The
company’s performance secured it a place at the Cleantech Innovation Showcase,
where finalists engaged directly with global stakeholders, including investors
and policymakers. Phoka M Holdings was subsequently awarded the Social Impact
Award, recognising both the innovation and its potential to deliver meaningful
societal benefits.
The
global recognition builds on recent domestic achievements under the GCIP-SA
Accelerator programme, which supported 38 early-stage enterprises during the
2025/26 cycle through mentorship, technical assistance and business development
support.

The
programme’s top 10 finalists reflected a diverse pipeline of solutions across
sectors such as renewable energy, waste management, smart logistics and
climate-smart agriculture. Participation in the cohort included a strong
representation of youth and women-led enterprises.
The
Global Cleantech Innovation Programme is funded by the Global Environment
Facility and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development
Organization, with the Technology Innovation Agency serving as the executing
partner in South Africa.
Organisers
say the success of South African innovators at the Vienna forum underscores the
country’s growing competitiveness in the global cleantech space and highlights
the role of innovation-driven enterprises in advancing sustainable economic
growth.
