The
Office of the Special Envoy for Climate Change, in collaboration with the
Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry, has convened the Kenya–California
Climate Partnership Advancement Meeting, marking a shift from policy
commitments to coordinated implementation.
Opening
the session, Special Envoy for Climate Change Ambassador Ali Mohamed emphasized
the urgency of translating the September 2025 Memorandum of Understanding
between Kenya and the State of California into tangible and measurable
outcomes. The engagement forms part of the broader California–Africa Climate
and Economic Partnership, which seeks to strengthen strategic collaborations
across the continent, including with countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, and
Ethiopia.

The
meeting comes at a time when global climate processes face increasing pressure,
with policymakers highlighting the growing importance of bilateral and regional
partnerships in driving progress. California, one of the world’s largest
economies, brings expertise in innovation, policy, and climate finance, while
Kenya offers proven capacity in renewable energy deployment, particularly in
geothermal power, alongside a growing pipeline of bankable green projects.
Discussions
during the meeting focused on aligning priorities across key sectors critical
to Kenya’s long-term economic resilience and competitiveness. These include
clean transportation and sustainable mobility, renewable energy and low-carbon
fuels, climate-smart agriculture, as well as technology, innovation, and
digital climate infrastructure.

Participants,
including senior government officials and technical experts, underscored the
need for a coordinated, whole-of-government approach to implementation, aimed
at linking policy frameworks with investment flows and on-the-ground execution.
The
partnership is expected to complement ongoing initiatives such as the Africa
Green Industrialisation Initiative, supporting project development, unlocking
climate-aligned financing, and strengthening institutional capacity. Officials
noted that the collaboration provides a pathway for accelerating green
industrial growth and positioning Kenya as a key player in the global energy
transition.
