Ghana has launched the Timbuktoo AgriTech Hub in Accra, an initiative aimed at accelerating digital innovation in agriculture and supporting technology-driven solutions across the continent’s agrifood value chain.

The launch event was addressed by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, who called on African startups and innovators to leverage emerging technologies to transform agriculture and strengthen food systems across Africa.

The Timbuktoo AgriTech Hub brings together innovators, investors, incubators and ecosystem partners from across the continent. Key partners supporting the initiative include the United Nations Development Programme, 500 Global and Seedstars. The platform is designed to empower entrepreneurs, scale promising digital solutions and mobilise investment to support the growth of Africa’s AgriTech ecosystem.

Speaking at the launch, the minister said Africa’s long-term development will depend on the creativity and innovation of its people supported by strong institutions and strategic partnerships. He noted that the hub represents an important step in advancing the continent’s innovation agenda by helping entrepreneurs transform ideas into impactful solutions.

Agriculture remains a key sector in Africa’s economy, providing livelihoods for millions of people. However, the sector continues to face challenges such as climate change, fragmented supply chains, limited access to finance and market inefficiencies.

According to the minister, digital technologies including data-driven tools, mobile platforms, artificial intelligence and improved digital infrastructure have the potential to enhance agricultural productivity, expand market access and improve resilience for farmers and agribusinesses.

The Timbuktoo AgriTech Hub will also support the broader innovation ecosystem through a dedicated capacity-building bootcamp for incubator managers aimed at strengthening institutions that nurture early-stage startups.

Samuel Nartey George reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a supportive environment for digital entrepreneurship through policies and partnerships that encourage innovation, attract investment and create opportunities for the next generation of African technology innovators.
