South Africa nominates Cynthia Lesufi for ATU Secretary-General position

The government of South Africa has formally nominated Cynthia Lesufi as its candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) for the 2027–2030 term.

Lesufi, who currently serves as a Tech Diplomat and Minister Counsellor for Communications, expressed gratitude to the South African government for the confidence placed in her nomination. She noted that the opportunity would allow her to contribute to strengthening Africa’s telecommunications and digital development agenda at the continental level.

She emphasized that Africa is at a critical stage in its digital transformation, with telecommunications and digital technologies playing an increasingly important role in economic growth, connectivity and innovation across the continent.

Lesufi also highlighted the importance of the ATU in promoting cooperation among African countries and supporting initiatives that foster a more connected and digitally empowered continent.

According to her, if elected, she intends to work closely with member states and partners to strengthen the union’s role in advancing Africa’s digital transformation and telecommunications development.
