MTN
MoMo Uganda has reiterated the importance of women’s financial empowerment in
driving economic growth during an event organized by the French Chamber of
Commerce Uganda (FCCU) in Kampala.
The
event, held at the Sheraton Hotel Kampala, brought together business leaders
and professionals for a discussion under the theme “Women at the Helm: Driving
Uganda’s Economic Transformation.”

Speaking
during the session, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of MTN MoMo Uganda,
Sarah Bateta Okwi, emphasized that financial inclusion and the deliberate
empowerment of women are key to building resilient economies. Drawing from her
leadership experience and her role as Chief Financial Officer at the fintech
firm, she noted that empowering women financially creates a ripple effect that
benefits families, communities, and national economies.
She
explained that when women have access to financial tools and resources,
households become more secure and communities are strengthened, ultimately
contributing to broader economic development.
According
to Okwi, the company’s financial services ecosystem reflects this belief, with
a significant number of its mobile money agents across the country being women
who run successful businesses that support their households and local
economies.
She
also highlighted the role of digital financial services in expanding
opportunities for women, noting that products such as mobile-based insurance,
savings, investment options, and credit facilities that do not require
traditional collateral are helping more women participate in economic
activities.

These
initiatives, she said, align with MTN MoMo’s ambition to build Africa’s largest
fintech platform and support customers in moving beyond basic financial
inclusion towards wealth creation.
Okwi
further noted that women in leadership positions play a critical role in
shaping inclusive growth by creating opportunities for other women across the
value chain and inspiring the next generation of leaders.
