The
South African National Space Agency (SANSA) and the Border Management Authority
(BMA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to share satellite data
and jointly develop tools to enhance surveillance at the country’s ports of
entry.
The
agreement aims to leverage Earth observation and geospatial intelligence to
improve situational awareness, support early warning systems, and enable
data-driven, intelligence-led border management.

SANSA CEO Humbulani Mudau
emphasized that effective border monitoring is crucial for protecting South
Africa’s sovereignty, economic stability, natural resources, and citizens, as
well as combating illegal crossings, illicit trade, and transnational threats.
The
collaboration positions technology and innovation at the core of national
security, marking a significant step in advancing South Africa’s use of
satellite capabilities for border protection and strategic planning.
