Ghana’s
Cabinet has approved the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy,
setting the stage for its formal launch by President John Dramani Mahama in the
coming weeks.
The
announcement was made by the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and
Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, who confirmed that Cabinet granted approval
last week. The forthcoming presidential launch is expected to outline Ghana’s
policy direction for technology governance and AI-driven innovation.
The
strategy was developed through a coordinated process led by the Responsible AI
Lab (RAIL) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi. The
lab oversaw technical processes and stakeholder consultations that culminated
in the adoption of the framework.
Professor
Jerry John Kponyo, Principal Investigator and Scientific Director of RAIL,
served as the academic and technical lead. He worked alongside Darlington Akogo,
Chief Executive Officer of minoHealth AI Labs, who acted as co-lead on the
strategy.
Officials
indicated that the framework emerged from an extensive consultative process
that included three major stakeholder engagements. Participants comprised
representatives from government, academia, industry, civil society, technology
innovators, and the judiciary. The consultations were aimed at ensuring the
strategy promotes innovation while embedding principles of responsibility,
inclusivity, and alignment with national development priorities.
With
Cabinet approval secured, the strategy positions Ghana to expand the
application of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies to support
economic growth, enhance public service delivery, and advance digital
transformation grounded in ethical standards.
