MTN
Group Chairman, Mcebisi Jonas, and Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate
Affairs Officer, Nompilo Morafo, engaged in a fireside chat themed “When
Business Becomes National Interest,” examining the expanding role of business
in shaping national development outcomes.

The
discussion focused on how corporate leadership intersects with sustainability,
public trust, and economic growth in an increasingly complex global
environment. Both leaders reflected on the responsibility of large enterprises
to balance commercial objectives with broader societal impact, particularly in
markets where business plays a critical role in enabling development.
Mr.
Jonas emphasised that businesses must demonstrate greater agility in navigating
geopolitical uncertainty while remaining committed to inclusive growth and
long-term national progress. He noted that corporate resilience and
adaptability are essential as governments and societies increasingly look to
the private sector as partners in addressing economic and social challenges.

Ms.
Morafo highlighted the importance of sustainability, ethical leadership, and
stakeholder engagement in building trust and ensuring that business contributes
meaningfully to national priorities. She underscored that aligning corporate
strategy with societal needs strengthens legitimacy and long-term value
creation.
The
conversation reinforced MTN Group’s perspective that modern businesses are not
only economic actors but also strategic contributors to national resilience,
development, and shared prosperity.
