The
Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has conducted a field
trial site visits in Durban and Ixopo as part of ongoing work on Dynamic
Spectrum Access (DSA).
The
trials followed an invitation by ICASA to stakeholders to participate in
coexistence simulation studies and practical field trials aimed at testing the
implementation of DSA technologies in real-world environments. The exercise
forms part of the regulator’s efforts to assess technical and operational
considerations associated with more efficient spectrum use.
According
to ICASA, the trials support the development of the Draft Regulations for
Dynamic Spectrum Access and Opportunistic Spectrum Management. The regulatory
work focuses on the innovation spectrum frequency ranges of 3800–4200 MHz and
5925–6425 MHz, which are being evaluated for shared and dynamic use.
The
field trials are intended to inform policy and regulatory decisions by
providing evidence on spectrum coexistence, interference management, and the
feasibility of dynamic and opportunistic spectrum access models in South
Africa.
