The
latest edition of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Academy
course on AI governance in practice commenced today, bringing together 38
policymakers, government officials, and AI policy leaders from over 20
countries. The week-long program focuses on developing secure and innovative
frameworks for AI governance.

Participants
will engage in design thinking labs, simulations, journey mapping, and
prototyping to examine AI system lifecycles, identify governance gaps, test
oversight tools, and co-develop national strategies. Scenario exercises will
address sector-specific challenges, risk mapping, and cross-border regulatory
negotiations.

By
the conclusion of the course, attendees are expected to produce a five-year AI
governance roadmap tailored to their institutional or national context, aligned
with global best practices and international frameworks. The program is jointly
organized by the ITU Regional Office for Africa and funded through the European
Union’s Global Gateway initiative.
