The Kenya Space Agency (KSA), led by Director General Brigadier Hillary Kipkosgey has participated in World Wetlands Day commemorations at the Mirire Wetland in Isiolo County. The event, themed “Wetlands and Indigenous Knowledge: Preserving Cultural Heritage,” included a walk through Isiolo town and focused on promoting environmental conservation.

Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Hon. Deborah Barasa, and Cabinet Secretary for EAC, ASALs and Regional Development, Hon. Beatrice Askul Moe attended the event, reflecting the government’s commitment to wetland protection.

Brig. Kipkosgey emphasized the importance of space technologies in conservation efforts, noting that KSA will provide satellite data to support decision-making for environmental management. World Wetlands Day is observed annually to raise awareness of wetlands’ ecological significance, their role in biodiversity, and their importance in preserving indigenous knowledge and cultural heritage.

The event brought together key stakeholders, including the National Environment Management Authority, Wetlands International, the Kenya Wildlife Service, and the Isiolo County Government, highlighting the value of multi-agency collaboration in safeguarding Kenya’s natural ecosystems.
