The
Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), H.E.
Wamkele Mene, has paid a courtesy visit to the World Bank Vice President for
Eastern and Southern Africa, Dr. Ndiame Diop, at the World Bank’s offices in
Nairobi.
During
the meeting, H.E. Mene briefed Dr. Diop and his team on the current state of
AfCFTA implementation, highlighting progress achieved across member states and
the tangible impacts recorded through the World Bank–supported BIASHARA
Project. The discussions focused on how ongoing collaboration is contributing
to the strengthening of intra-African trade and regional value chains.
The
two sides also explored potential new areas of cooperation, including climate
change and green industrialisation, the participation of women and youth in
trade, and the role of the digital economy in advancing regional integration
and competitiveness.
H.E.
Mene expressed appreciation for the World Bank’s continued support to the
AfCFTA process and stressed the importance of deepening partnerships to sustain
momentum on regional integration, particularly in the context of evolving
global trade dynamics.
