The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has marked Global Privacy Day with a press conference that also signalled the commencement of the 2026 National Privacy Week, themed “Privacy in the Age of Emerging Technologies: Trust, Ethics, and Innovation.”

Speaking during the ecosystem briefing, the National Commissioner of NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, provided updates on the growth of Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem, noting that it has generated more than 23,000 jobs in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He added that the ecosystem is now valued at over ₦16.2 billion and outlined the Commission’s strategic priorities for 2026.

A key moment at the event was the presentation of the National Data Protection Champion Award to the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, in recognition of his support and contributions to the advancement of data protection and privacy in Nigeria.

In his remarks, Dr Tijani commended the NDPC for its progress, stating that the Commission has continued to set standards aligned with global best practices while responding to Nigeria’s digital and socio-economic realities.

The event brought together stakeholders from across government and the digital ecosystem, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Engr. Nadungu Gagare; the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Charles Ebuebu; and chief executives of agencies such as NIPOST, NIGCOMSAT and the Universal Service Provision Fund.

NDPC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that trust, ethics and innovation remain central to Nigeria’s digital transformation as emerging technologies continue to reshape the global digital landscape.
